As a society, our perceptions of social class are greatly influenced by the media. In most cases, one can argue, the media presents a distorted picture. In her article "Framing Class: Media Representations of Wealth and Poverty", Dr. Diana Kendall explores how the media (reality shows, sitcoms, television series), represent the major social classes in the United States. She argues that the media is responsible for "misrepresenting" social class in American society. For this assignment you are to write a reaction essay to this article. Your essay should answer the following questions.

a. According to Kendall how does television represent the Upper Class, the Poor and Middle Class?

b. What is your favorite television show? Is it consistent with Kendall’s analysis of the media framing of class.

c. Do you think your view of social class has been influenced by the media as much as Kendal would argue?

Every culture has different ways of named people when it is concerned with social class. American society is already recognized for its movies, television shows and series. They show that Americans have enough money to get whatever they want and make people to waist the money that they do not have. When the America media presents poor people they named a specific ethnicity like African-Americans. This kind of things represent that the American society has been influenced for the media.

In her article, "Framing Class: Media Representations of Wealth and Poverty in America" Dr. Diana Kendall explains the differences between social class in the America society and shows in the media. We all want to be successful in life and pursue our dreams and goals. The media shows that our society has to have the dreams and goals based on the rich and powerful people to success in life. Kendall states, " Television shows, magazines, and newspaper sell the idea that the only way to get ahead is to identify with the rich and powerful and to live vicariously through them" (139). This explains why there are a lot of young people trying to be rich within music industry. It is because the media shows them that music is an easy way to be successful. The media represent the upper class as people that also have economic issues with food and basic needs like working and poor class have. As the Paris Hilton’s television show, The Simple Life, in this television program Paris Hilton is shown like a person that has the same problems that a working class person has (Kendall 139-140). On the other hand, America society shows poor people not as constantly as they show the rich. But when they do, they show a person of a specific ethnicity, usually black, and a person with problems that they cannot handle. Kendall states, " The poor are blamed for their own problems; stereotypes of the homeless as bums, alcoholics, and drug addicts, caught in a hopeless downward spiral because of their individual pathological behavior" ( 140-141). This explains that the poor are the people in the America society that do not have any hope to succeed. Also, Kendall explains how the middle class is view. We have the assumption that the middle class have a specific knowledge, college level, and that the majority is white. This became because of the media. According to Kendall, " Middle class values of honesty, integrity, and hard work were integral ingredients of early sitcoms" (142). This clearly show that our perceptions are part of what the media shows us. We are noted for the way we dress and the way we talk. But those stereotypes are brought to us by the media. The media is the one that gave us the idea of how a person of a upper class, a poor class and a middle class have to look like.

A person’s attitude is explained when people know where that person came from. The same thing happens with the media. The music and the television shape the society. My favorite television show is The Simpsons. This is a cartoon series that show a lifestyle of a working class family in Springfield, U.S.A. This television show illustrates the point in Kendall article. Kendall writes, " The most popular portrayal of the working class is caricature framing, which depicts people in negative ways, such as being dumb, white trash, bufoons, bigots or slobs… speech patterns of the working class are not as good as those of the middle or upper class" (141). This characteristics mentioned by Kendall are exactly the same that are shown in the cartoon series. When people first know me, they think that I am a person who like to be creative. They think that I like everything organized. In some part this is true, but I am a person that also likes to laugh and make jokes. If I asked a person that just met me what is my favorite television show, he or she will say American Next Top Model. But if I do the same question to a person that met me 2 months ago, he or she will already know that I love comedy shows. This one way of note people personality. But going back to Kendall explanation, this also applies to her opinion about social class. The television shows give us a pattern of how to view each people. For example, if we listen to somebody saying a lot of bad words, we are going to think that this person is from a low class society, while if we listen to somebody speaking properly, we will think that this person is doctor or lawyer and comes from a upper class. We can see this in The Simpsons series. This working class family has bad speech. The one who brings money to the house is the husband, because the wife have to take care of the children. They have three children, and two of them are in the school, public school. The girl plays the saxophone, and she is a good student, while the boy is a bad student, and he love to make bad jokes. He says a lot of bad words, and his parents cannot control him. The father is a slob as Kendall writes, but also work hard. Kendall says, " The working class is described as ‘labor’ " (141). The father of the family works in a nuclear plant all day, while the wife is taking care of the baby. This television show confirms every description of Kendall’s article about the working class.

I think that in the America society the media influences a lot in how the people view social class. When I used to live in the Dominican Republic, I did not named anybody because of their social class. People can notice what class each person belongs to not because of the media but because the way the person is dresses and the way he or she speaks. But sometimes that stereotype did not work. The American society is different. They already have a pattern of how a person of every class is going to look like. And this is shown in the media. The upper class people are the ones that live in the up state, with extremely big houses and two or more cars. One of the television series that shows a upper class family is The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In this show we can see the typical American upper class family. They even have a person who serve them. The father is a business management, and the children are in private schools. A middle class family is My Wife and Kids. This television show breaks one of the patterns of the American society because in this show the family is African- American instead of white same with prince of Bel-Air. But in concern with the others characteristics explained by Kendall they are honest. They have integrity, and they are hard workers (142). In this series the father is the one who brings money to the house, while the wife take care of their three children. The three children are in public schools, but they are involved in extracurricular activities. The working class is the one I mentioned before, The Simpsons. And the poor class they do not show it. They are view like the black sheep of society. The four social class mentioned by Kendall are the social class that we see in the America society. When I first came to the United States, I thought that there were not poverty because the American television shows that I viewed did not show the poor people.

The media influence our personality as our values and our culture do. We label people for what we see in television, or because of what we hear in the radio. Not all the people who have two cars in their house is rich, or not all alcoholics are poor. The upper, middle, working and poor class not always have the characteristics that we see. People can succeed in their life having their own goals, not pursuing a famous people goal. The United States is recognized for been organized. And they are also including social class. There would be more successful people if we forget about the stereotype of social class.
