During this semester all the students in my English 138T class have chosen one topic that they cared about the most and wrote a essay to persuade others to accept their idea, or simply making their audience to think about the main theme of their essay, including me.

In my case, I have chosen communication technology as the topic of my persuasive essay due to two simple fact, first effective communication made people’s life easier then before, nowadays we don’t need to suffer from not talking to their parents or friends for a long time even if they are at the opposite location on Earth. I experience this by myself because my best friend Mathew is in China and I am in USA, but I can still talk to him quite frequently.

The second reason is that an effective communication system can also make technology and our civilization developing faster than before. Back to middle age it was extremely hard for scholars to find researching data from other scholars, and there are almost either no communication or limited communication between researchers due to the slowness of the message distribution. But now we have internet that we can basically get everything we want in a few minutes, it accelerated our technology changing rate in which leads people to a better life

Therefore, I wrote a persuasive paper that trying to convince government we need a better communication network then we do now due to the benefits, and I also explained a number of problems that had occurred due to lack of communication.

The Importance of Communication

Communication, one of the most important abilities for every resident on Earth, makes sure that species can live their everyday life normally. It is communication that enables ants to find their food and leave traces for their fellows informing its location, carrying those food back to their hole through cooperating although need communication, due to their small size comparing to their food it is simply impossible for them to complete such a magnificent job. Not to mention that a group of ants usually composed by millions of ants together, lack of communication can mean the penalization of the entire system.

Our human society has one common point with the ant society that is the enormous member amount. Despite the fact that we have divided ourselves into different subgroups called country, human population never stopped growing except a few moment throughout the history. Hence our ancestors were trying hard to increase the communication efficiency between people, this is essential to maintain the social stability. Fast communication not only can accelerate decision making hence help the entire group complete tasks that are unable to be done by individual, handle emergencies that are vital for the survival of the entire group, but also can strength the tie between individuals. I really would like to propose that the government spend more money on communication method researching to improve the communication efficiency in USA, which will bring great benefit for all people living in USA from both private level and national level.

First of all, fast communication helped us dealing with catastrophic natural disaster much faster and better. When facing natural disaster the whole country needs to gather all resources and come up with effective plans to cope the situation. Better communication allows us to exchange information quicker and make important decisions in a short time, which it’s extremely important when facing severe emergencies. Everyone in the college should have heard about a horrible disease called Black Death. The plague killed around two hundred million people, which is about one third of the entire population in medieval Europe. Although the lack of medicine care is also one major reason that causing such a huge death toll, but the main reason is the fast diffusion of the disease itself. When the plague was still in a small range, people did not know anything about it. Therefore people kept traveling around and bringing the bacteria from one place to the other. If the information about the plague could ever be exchanged faster, I don’t think the outcome will be that worse.

You may question my opinion by saying that I cannot go back to medieval through time travel, so I don’t know anything about it. But there are examples from modern time that can prove the importance of fast communication. For instance, in 2003, there was an outbreak of a disease called severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) in China, it first took place in Hong Kong and soon spread to the rest of China and 37 other countries. In China it caused 5348 infections and 349 deaths in which has a fatality rate of 6.6 percent. This epidemic incurred the scrutiny from all over the world due to the fact that China is the heaviest populated country in the world, any administration mistakes could lead unprecedented outbreak of a new plague. I was still in grade three during the outbreak and I still remember that the range of this disease was so wide therefore all school in Beijing gave their students a two- month- vacation.

At that time everyone was expecting a catastrophic outcome with millions deaths, but fortunately this epidemic last only one year, thanks to the fast communication provided by our modern technology. During the peak of this epidemic the government kept playing clips to teach people how to prevent SARS through hand washing and musk wearing in a twenty-four seven frequency. Furthermore, all patients, facilities and people who ever had contacts with the patient must be separated right after the patient has been proved to be SARS positive, of course all these processes were completed by cell phones and other modern communication devices, not to mention all the relative news are online for people. Moreover, experiencing doctors in major hospitals would teach their experiences of diagnosing the SARS and preventing themselves from getting infected while looking after patients to younger doctors through telephone or cell phone, in which increasing the chance of curing patients and preventing the spread of the plague greatly. It is fairly to say that if human’s communication technology were not as efficient as they are right now, this epidemic could be worse. From here we also can prove that fast communication can bring much better life for human.

Next, communication advantage does not only make convenience when facing emergencies and vital moments, it can also make convenience for people in everyday life. Nowadays the entire Earth has been going through a process of globalization and it is becoming more and more like a huge family where people from all around world can sit together and talk. It is now a common phenomenon for a person to travel from her hometown to the other place, or even another country to work or study. Although the motivations behind the action are different, all people who ever left home for a long time would understand the feeling of loneliness and the desire to see the face of parents and friends. It does not mean that life is not good, it only symbolized a kind of human natural, that everyone wants to stay with the people they cared the most. If it was two hundred years ago, then there was no way to alleviate this longing in a short time, because back to the beginning of 19 th century although there was telegram that can help people to communicate with each other from a far distance, but it is very expensive and sometimes cannot reach the person on time. However now we only need to calculate the time zone and pick up our cell phones then make the phone call. As an international student myself I have enjoyed the benefit of modern technology for a long time. Whenever I want to call my family, which is half Earth away from me, I can reach them in less than a minute, and the package only needs me to pay 10 dollars a month.

After you finished reading the paragraphs above, you might think that our communication system are almost perfect, why should we invest more money to research something that is already perfect? Well despite the fact that our communication system is much better than it was, but there are still some flaws within it.

First I would like to point out that in accordance with the data from the website Crime Library, there are approximately 900,000 people missing in the year of 2013 (until March), which turned out to be about 2300 people a day. Horrible isn’t it? I think although it has a lot of things to do with USA’s high crime rates, but lack way of communication is also an important fact.

The following map shows the overall situation of the areas that are covered by cell phone in USA, and as you can see, surprisingly there are still a lot of areas in USA that are not being covered by cell phone signal. From the map we can also correct one of our misconceptions about the uncovered places. People used to think that those areas tend to be poor or have only a little population. This is only partly true. We can see on the map there are some places around California that are not on cellular coverage. California should be one of the most

prosperity states, but there are still a lot of places are no coverage at all. These areas can really become dangerous for everyone. People who passed by these places could encounter dangerous and have no way to call help. Not to mention some criminals would love to use these places as their safe house or even hide their spoils. Due to the fact those places are not covered by cell phones, even witness could not inform the law enforcement department right away and there is also opportunity that those witness would be in danger, without any mean could use by them to get away from the immense danger.

Second, I must point out that even in areas that are covered by the signal sometimes people will have difficulty to get the phone. I believe all people must have encountered some annoying occasions that when you have a very important phone call to pick but the conversation suddenly stopped because of some technical problems.

It maybe does not create any huge problems in the past, but if something happened and your phone cannot receive anything, it would incur severe losses for the person.
